Ginkgo biloba

Background:

The dried leaves are used to produce a Ginkgo extract that is used to make tablets, capsules and liquid tinctures.

Uses:

Ginkgo Biloba improves the blood circulation throughout the body, and is used to slow or reverse the ageing process and improve memory.

Another complex herb, Ginkgo Biloba increases the blood flow to the brain. This helps improve short and long-term memory and speeds up reaction times.

Its actions are especially notable if the brain function is deficient such as in Alzheimer's disease.

Ginkgo Biloba is also a powerful antioxidant, and mops up free radicals that may be linked to premature ageing and dementia.

Ginkgo Biloba has been widely investigated, and is being tested for preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), tinnitus and circulatory problems such as frostbite and chilblains.

Dose:

Average doses are between 40 and 80 mg taken three times a day, although some professionals say that 120 mg a day is not enough.

Safety:

Most research has found few side effects and no over dosage problems. Rarely, stomach upsets, headache and allergic skin reactions have been reported.

Don't take Ginkgo Biloba if you are also taking aspirin or blood-thinning drugs.
