A-Z of vitamins and minerals

Phosphorus

RDA from 400 to 775 mg

Phosphorus is a very abundant mineral in the body, is vital for energy production and enables the B vitamins to work properly.

Where do you get it?

It is found in meat, poultry, eggs and seeds. Colas and other fizzy drinks contain a lot of phosphorus as well.

Too much:

Too much phosphorus can contribute to calcium deficiency and osteoporosis. An imbalance between calcium and phosphorus increases the risk of high blood pressure and bowel cancer.

Too little:

Deficiency is very uncommon, but symptoms can include muscle weakness, appetite loss, anaemia and increased frequency of infections.

You may need more phosphorus if you regularly drink a large amount of alcohol or take antacid preparations.

Supplement:

Supplements are rarely needed but if they are, it's important to maintain a balance with calcium and magnesium.

Having large amounts of fizzy soft drinks will disturb this balance, and over a long time may be a factor in developing osteoporosis later in life.
